Adjectives ending in -ed and -ing
Adjectives ending in -ed and -ing are both used to describe nouns or pronouns, but they serve different purposes and convey different meanings.
Adjectives ending in -ed are used to describe emotions and they are derived from the past participle form of verbs.
For example:
She was excited about her new job. (excited describes her enthusiasm)
The children were tired after playing all day. (tired describes their exhaustion)
He was surprised to see his old friend at the party. (surprised describes his astonishment)
Adjectives ending in -ing are used to describe things or situations that cause a particular emotion or feeling. They often indicate what makes a person feel a certain way. These adjectives are derived from the present participle form of verbs.
For example:
The movie was exciting from beginning to end. (exciting describes the movie, which causes excitement in the viewers)
The amusing story made everyone laugh. (amusing describes the story, which creates amusement in the audience)
The challenging book kept her occupied for hours. (challenging describes the book, which induces a feeling of difficulty or challenge)
It’s essential to pay attention to the context when using these adjectives. There are cases where both of them can be used, causing a change in the meaning of the sentence.
For example, “an interested student” implies a student who is showing interest, while “an interesting student” suggests a student who is engaging or captivating. Understanding the distinction between the two can help you express yourself more precisely in English.
